The Bobbsey Twins

Today the girls went for a haircut. They asked me if they could have their hair cut short. Now their hair has gotten very long over the years but I decided that it was their hair and that if they wanted to cut it short then it was entirely their choice. I did make sure that they understood that once it was cut, that was it, it would take a while for it to grow back but it would grow back.

I must admit I was a little apprehensive; what is it about little girls having long hair anyway. I even spoke to the Papa to hear his thoughts but he was like "it's their hair" and he spoke to them to make sure they really wanted to do it and also supported them by saying that it would be great to have shorter hair for summer.

So off we went and here are the results of two very pleased little girls and their new dos.

The Fashionista's natural wave has come out with her cut bob. She has such lovely hair but she doesn't look after it very well so hopefully this new shorter style will be easier for her to manage and brush!

Agent Smelly and her beautiful sleek bob. The Papa and I were a little taken back at how grown up she now looks but agree it's stunning.

I read this article a day or so after the girls had cut their hair and I really felt glad that I hadn't stopped them from getting their bobs. I think Jada Pinkett-Smith made some really good points.

When Jada Pinkett-Smith was asked why she let her daughter Willow shave her head, this is what she said:

"This subject is old but I have never answered it in its entirety. And even with this post it will remain incomplete.

The question why I would LET Willow cut her hair. First the LET must be challenged. This is a world where women, girls are constantly reminded that they don't belong to themselves; that their bodies are not their own, nor their power, or self determination. I made a promise to endow my little girl with the power to always know that her body, spirit, and her mind are HER domain. Willow cut her hair because her beauty, her value, her worth is not measured by the length of her hair. It's also a statement that claims that even little girls have the RIGHT to own themselves and should not be a slave to even their mother's deepest insecurities, hopes, and desires. Even little girls should not be a slave to the preconceived ideas of what a culture believes a little girl should be. More to come. Another day."

  1. Your girls look stunning with their new hair cuts! I guess kids are just like adults: a new hair style feels good!

I totally agree with your thoughts on 'letting' children have their hair cut. Yes, it's their hair. And it grows back. I was never allowed to have my hair cut as a child and I felt so controlled. My hair was really my mother's hair.

I don't think my four youngest girls would want to do anything drastic with their hair, like cutting it very short or shaving it off completely. They are very girly and like to look traditionally pretty. (The idea of what is accepted as pretty or beautiful could be challenged.) But... my eldest daughter has short rainbow hair at the moment, with shaved sides. Oh well, it's a change from her blue hair. And her hair will grow back when she decides this style is no longer for her!

    1. I so admire people who have the courage to have fun with their hair. Rainbow hair sounds brilliant! I have always been very conservative and for the first time (since I was 2 apparently ... so my mum tells me) I had my hair cut above my shoulders. My life is flashing by and I have always been too worried how I will look. I think it's time I got a little funky, before I am too old ... lol

Your comment about the controlling of your hair really hit a nerve. I remember asking to have my hair cut and my mum telling me a resounding no! I had to wait til I was a teenager before I was allowed a "proper haircut". Although after looking back at some of my mushroom perms maybe she should have stayed in charge of it ...

    2. I have to laugh. Mushroom perms? When I finally got in charge of my own hair, I had a few of them too. And then short spikes... I did everything possible except shaving my hair off. My mother must have despaired over me. But my days of experimenting are over. I am now satisfied with my traditional style. I think everyone needs to have fun and know they have the freedom to do what they want. btw, I love your profile picture. That is such a great photo. And I love your hair!!
