First Day of School

There is something decidedly weird about posting a picture of your daughters first day of school when she is nearly 13 yet at the same time I still look at her and think she's too young for it all. How on earth people send their kids off at 5 years of age beats me!

But anyway here she is in part of her school uniform. It was too hot for the school jumper and all their blazers (which are burgundy in colour) have been held up and we'll be getting them in a couple of weeks.

  1. No matter how old they are, they're still your baby!
It's funny to think you're having the opposite season from us right now (as I look out my window at 15+ inches of snow)

    1. You are so right. My mum still calls me her baby ... lol
That is a lot of snow! We don't live in an area that gets snow, it's just a couple of hours drive but we rarely go ... we are sun worshippers. ;)
What's your lovely young lady up to these days?

  2. Very smart! Did you cry at the school gate like all the other 'first day of school' mothers? I bet The Fashionista didn't cry. I can imagine her striding off, eager and full of confidence, ready to enjoy her day. I guess it felt strange at home with just Agent Smelly.

    1. We parents were invited to attend a formal powhiri (which is a Maori ceremony) welcoming all newcomers. Ladies go in first, followed by the males in another group, followed by all the students. There is a lot of singing and chanting and of course all in Maori. I didn't understand anything that was going on but it was pretty cool that they have a ceremony to welcome the children. It's quite a ritual. Afterwards there were nibbles and tea and coffee for the parents and teachers whilst the kids had a quick break before going off with the Year 13's for their first day. TF stayed quite calm, slightly nervous she said but tempered with lots of excitement. Oh and just before we walked across the lights to go into the school there was quite a car crash right in front of us, so I stayed to check the lady in her car was ok and to leave my witness details as the other car kept going!!! I sent TF across to school and met her a few minutes later. Another newbie at the lights and her got chatting over it, turns out they catch the same bus and are in similar classes so she's hanging around with her too.

Agent Smelly spent the day being spoilt by Grannie ... who arrived here with home baking! Someone was happy. ;)

    1. I spent the day in the town shopping (the school's an hour away) as she hadn't caught the bus before and was going to be shown by a slightly older friend the next day who attends there. First day was simply for Year 9's and 13's who were there to show them around the place and show them the ropes ... bit like an orientation day.

    1. Mostly yes, we did have a melt-down evening a couple of nights ago but she was really overly tired. She told me last night a friend we know who is in her class fell asleep on the bus the other night and had to be woken to get off at her stop. Which could have been awkward as the bus is rural so the stops are very big in between towns ... lol

    1. It's been a roller coaster of a beginning but what I hear from some parents of kids who've always gone to school, it's been hard for some of their kids too. I have to keep biting my tongue from calling them on some of their stupid rules!
